Ucluelet Brewing Co. is a small (15Hl) award-winning community brewery with a tight-knit team committed to quality and inclusivity. Our focus is on the taproom (a renovated church) with limited distribution of cans and kegs. As Head Brewer, you will report to the brewery Owner and act as the lead on all beer production-related duties. From grain to glass, milling to packaging, the ideal candidate will be involved in the entire process and be committed to maintaining a clean and safe work environment. Daily duties and responsibilities (shared with Assistant):
The right candidate for Head Brewer will oversee all brewery tasks listed below:
- Schedule creation and management
- Sales reporting and registering of new products with BCLDB (SKUs, DSWR, PPMS, etc)
- Ingredient ordering, hop contract management
- Logistics coordination
- Staff management, training, and mentoring
- Work closely with Front of House and Kitchen teams
- Operation, cleaning, sanitization, organization & general maintenance of: o Packaging equipment (canning and kegging lines), brewhouse and cellar, Tanks, hoses, other equipment, draft system, and lines
- Brewing- Milling, mashing, boiling, heat exchange & transfers, fermentation management, pilot batches
- Cellaring- Fermentation monitoring, yeast management, dry hopping, transfers, CIP’s, carbonation, quality control
- Kegging, canning, labelling, keg washing, line cleaning & maintenance
- Draft system maintenance and cleaning
- Record keeping (brew logs, recipes)
- Pallet unloading & delivery help
- Spent grain disposal assistance/coordination
- Event work (Beer festivals, local markets)
- Set up, operation, and take down of jockey box and event tent
- Follow company standard operating procedures and employee conduct policies
- Safe use of hand trucks, pallet jacks, and all brewery equipment
Requirements:
- Excellent attitude & passion for craft beer are a must!
- Minimum of 1 year of head brewing experience
- Formal brewing-specific education is preferred
- Willing to relocate to the West Coast of Vancouver Island (if not already a local), and we can provide staff accommodation until mid-May.
- Positive, punctual, and upbeat attitude
- Capable of taking direction, giving direction, and able to work varied & long shifts if required
- A desire to learn and grow within the craft brewing industry
- Ability to stand on your feet for an entire shift
- Ability to work through repetitive tasks
- Physically fit and able to carry 25 kg (50lbs) regularly, as well as being able to work in tight physical spaces
- Ability to work in environments of varying temperatures (cold fridge, hot brewery)
- Ability to focus, manage time, and multitask in a busy environment, both independently and as part of a team
- Self-starter who’s able to work independently and prioritize tasks to meet deadlines
- Aptitude for mechanical troubleshooting and problem solving
- Excellent verbal and written communication skills
- Previous experience working with chemicals/ WHIMIS certification required
- Serving it Right, OFA 1 certifications

Lighthouse Brewing Company has been brewing craft beer in Victoria since 1998 and has a long-established track record of quality and great beers. We are looking to fill TWO positions (one full-time, one part-time) on our brewing team!
JOB DESCRIPTION
Reporting to the Brewery Manager, the Brewer position is part of a full cycle Operations team that extends from brewing through to packaging finished products. The Brewer is responsible for all aspects of raw materials handling, milling of grain, wort production, fermentation monitoring, yeast handling and pitching, finished beer monitoring, equipment CIP and general sanitation, parts and hose maintenance, and operating all packaging equipment.
Job Duties & Responsibilities:
- Monitoring the Brewhouse to ensure the production of consistent, high-quality wort to specification
- All aspects of yeast management
- Cleaning and sanitation of fermentation vessels, yeast brinks, and conditioning vessels
- Transferring of finished beer, via centrifuge or CO2 transfer to conditioning tanks
- Bulk malt receiving and milling operations
- Brewing pilot batches and working with the Head Brewer to create new products.
- Measuring carbonation levels on beer in conditioning tanks and making required adjustments to ensure beer meets quality specifications.
- Follow inventory procedures for all raw materials, chemicals, beer, small parts, packaging, supplies etc.
- Ensure equipment is well maintained to operate safely and efficiently.
- Participate in the identification of equipment performance issues
- Work with the management team to reduce or eliminate waste of materials, time, and utilities.
- Perform CIP operations on packaging equipment.
- Operate the bottle filler, monitor for quality, and troubleshoot issues as they arise.
- Operate the canning line solo, monitor for quality, and troubleshoot issues as they arise.
- Operate the keg washing and filling lines, monitor for quality, and troubleshoot issues as they arise.
- Warehouse finished goods and prepare shipments.
Education / Training:
- Minimum 2 -5 years of previous brewing experience in a commercial/production setting
- Formal brewing education and/or equivalent post-secondary education
- Knowledge of beer styles and recipe development is an asset
- Previous Warehouse / Manufacturing experience
- Class 5 Driver’s License
