International Trade Policy – HS Codes: 7612.90.91, 7612.90.99 aluminum cans

To all Members,

As the trade war heats up between Canada and the USA, I would like to encourage you to review the email template below produced for the provincial associations of Craft brewers. As you undoubtedly have heard, the Canadian government has announced its intention to impose trade surtaxes on steel, aluminum and other products from the United States.

I am asking you to agree to send the following email to ac.adanacobfsctd-2dd4b6@nif.firat-ffirat.nif at the International Trade Policy Division. Your support for applying a surtax on filled aluminum cans coming into Canada versus empty aluminum cans originating from the United States, will demonstrate to the government the unified concerns of over 800 craft brewers across Canada.

The timeline of this submission is extremely tight, submissions end tomorrow June 15.

Please cut and paste this email and fill in your own details and let the government hear we are united on the proposed measure.

Thanks in advance for your support.

Re: HS Codes: 7612.90.91, 7612.90.99 aluminum cans

The Government of Canada has recently announced the intention to impose trade surtaxes on steel, aluminum, and other products from the United States as a countermeasure to the application of tariffs on steel and aluminum products from Canada announced by the United States on May 31, 2018.

Upon review of the list released by the Government of Canada of products subject to the countermeasure against the United States, it appears that aluminum cans used by craft breweries in Canada will be subject to a 10% surtax. (HS Codes: 7612.90.91 and 7612.90.99)

A vast majority of craft breweries in British Columbia primarily use aluminum cans to package product, and the number of cans purchased from the United States by the craft beer industry has been increasing annually. A new 10% surtax on all aluminum cans purchased in the United States will have a substantial impact on what are already challenging margins for our businesses.

Craft breweries are small, independently owned, and we are committed to the communities in which we operate. We feel it is important that you are aware that this particular countermeasure will have a substantive detrimental effect on our operations.

We respectfully submit that the Government of Canada remove aluminum cans (HS Codes: 7612.90.91 and 7612.90.99) from its list of affected products as countermeasures to the new United States tariffs. Instead, the Government of Canada could include filled aluminum cans originating from the United States in its list of affected products. This proposed measure would be both punitive to the United States and would not punish industries such as ours for packaging our products in aluminum cans originating from the United States.

Yours truly,

Again the deadline for submissions Friday June 15 so if inclined please send this in on or before Friday.
